Best Dressed Men at the 73rd Golden Globe Awards: My Top 5

It had been a while since I last had the chance to stay up all night to watch award shows so last night I was all giddy with anticipation trying to stay awake for the Golden Globes. Though the ceremony itself keeps getting duller by the year men's fashion seems to be on the up.

Looking at my last Golden Globes post from 2014 it looks like actors (and their stylist) have finally understood that while a classic black tuxedo is perfectly elegant it can get a bit repetitive. So this year I am happy to have my list topped with guys who tried something different.

Eddie Redmayne tops the list in a bicolour number by Gucci. I find that pairing black trousers with a different colour works great for evening. That, together with the subtle polka dot print of the jacket and the slim fit makes for a perfect modern take on evening wear.

Following suit is Ryan Gosling, no surprise here. He, too, went for a bicolour combination – black trousers and a classic ivory evening jacket by Ralph Lauren. Gosling's build is slightly too broad for a slim fit. However, he achieved a slim effect by having all pieces perfect fit and carefully choosing a spread collar with a bowtie that didn't overpower the look. He finished it off with a pair of Gucci patent leather shows – the most popular choice last night.

Paul Dano, who has had a terrific year in movies and TV (Love & Mercy, Youth, War & Peace), was decked down in Prada. I will never tire of repeating how strong a colour midnight blue is for evening. In his case, choosing a double-breasted jacket was a perfect choice as he's a tall but narrow-shouldered guy. Tod's patent leather shoes finished off the look.

Tom Ford was the designer of choice for Michael Fassbender. It is the strong detailing that make this black look interesting – the very traditional shawl lapels, cuffed jacket sleeves and bowtie, all in satin. Should the trousers have been taken up a bit more and paired with an evening slipper instead of lace ups the look would have been perfect. The beautiful Chopard timepiece on his wrist somehow makes up for that.

Orlando Bloom is the only actor who also appeared on my list a couple of years back. His black Lanvin suit was a very different take this year. The top half of the look was an improvement. I love the simple jacket and Lanvin's signature oversizes bowtie. However, a slim fit on the trousers would have suited the patent leather slippers, my favourite footwear choice of the night as was his grooming. Nothing updates a classic evening look like a modern haircut.

Still thinking about... Prada FW13

The FW13 Prada advertising campaign, which was released earlier this week, reminded me of how much I liked the collection. Even though it is meant for the next cold season I find it to be very much adaptable to SS13 – if you take out the coats and wool jumpers you're left with punchy tailoring, classic shirts and a lot of character. My favourite touch form the collection was the slight stylish detail with half of the collar shirts popping out of the jumper as if they were school boys.

Prada unveils their FW13 campaign featuring Ezra Miller, Ben Wishaw and Christoph Waltz

Just when you thought Prada had pretty much run out of cool male faces to star in their campaigns the brand unveils their FW13 advertising images featuring Ezra Miller, Ben Wishaw and Christoph Waltz.
The choice is simply spot-on as it covers the three main market age points and three different styles – from classic (a lot of what next season's Prada is all about), to a bit of sartorial quirk and down to the young and fearless.
The campaign translates perfectly Miuccia's inspiration form the New Wave cinema in the 60's captured by David Sims with the wonderful set design by OMA for Knoll we saw at the show back in January.
If there was ever a season to stock up your wardrobe with timeless Prada pieces this is it!

Most Stylish of the Week: Met Gala 2013 Edition

This year's Met Gala promised to be an interesting one, what with the punk theme and all. I am quite glad I don't blog about womenswear these days because, truth to be told, the list of misses is much longer than that of hits. It was, however, a great night for menswear. Whether it the guys went for classic looks or for a daring one adhering to the theme, a lot of them were simply spotless.
Nicholas Hoult was my absolute winner, his midnight blue moiré shawl collar tuxedo jacket by Tom Ford was chic, young and was cut to perfection. I've been raving about this guy for months and, if you were still doubting, this is why.
Matthew Mosshart doesn't tend to get a lot of attention, which is usually directed to his always fatally dressed girlfriend Kelly Osbourne. Last night, the model went for a super cool take on an evening suit with a midnight blue-trimmed black double-breasted jacket and matching midnight blue trousers. The perfect detail was the silk bow replacing a classic bowtie.
Hamish Bowles has always been one of the most imacuately dressed gentlemen in the industry. He has an extraordinary ability to stay classic and elegant yet daring and witty. He donned an off-the-charts Tom Ford tux jacket embroidered with safety pins and mother-of-pearl buttons. He also went for a bit of man-liner and a black manicure, which not only admire but applaud.



Pharell Williams chose Lanvin once again. His stunning patterned suit in a classic shape was enough to stand out but the slight eye-shadow and gold ring made the look even more memorable.
Another guy who I always admire for his pushing the (fashion) envelope is Jamie Campbell Bower. The British actor wore a Moschino tuxedo with safety pin embellished collar and cummerbund and black and white spectator shoes. To top it all off, he went for a sick (I've always wanted to use that expression) and hair style and a nose ring very apt for the theme.
It wouldn't be a great fashion event without Eddie Redmayne, who wore Dior Homme last night. The actor looks as slick as he does comfortable in a tux. Midnight blue is a favourite choice of mine (have I eve mentioned it?) and Eddie wears it best!
Armie Hammer chose to wear Ralph Lauren. His ivory dinner jacket was a breath of fresh air amongst the other dark choices. I would have just loved to maybe see more of a punk note on him. Though, truth to be told, he did wear skull and crossbones cufflinks.
Jamie Lannister – I mean, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau wore a Brunello Cucinelli tux also in midnight blue. His was a more traditional take on the evening suit but there is something about the old-school part-in hairstyle and untidy bowtie that makes it look just right for me.
Dane DeHaan never gets enough credit for his off-beat fashion choices. The new Harry Osborn wore an all-black Prada suit. His odd haircut, the studded silk tie and the tasselled loafers are as unexpected on his as they're cool.

Most Stylish of the Week: Suited up at CinemaCon

It has also been hard this week to cut the best looks down to six. I also have no idea why I've decided to only have six guys on the Most Stylish of the Week post...
Zachary Quinto, who usually overdoes colour or accessories when he dresses for the red carpet looked sharp and cool and ready for spring at CinemaCon. His rolled-up red suit trousers were paired up with suede black lace-ups and a muted checked shirt to balance out the standout colour. My favourite touch was the black and white belt, which made the look a bit dressier and kept it interesting.
It's no secret how big a man-crush I have on Joseph Gordon-Levitt. He always looks great. In this occasion he wore a grey checked Prada suit with a micro-print burgundy tie, which is a nice break from his usual blue suit. I would only complain about the jacket sleeves, the shirt must always pop out.
Chris Pine has been wearing impressively nice outfits as of late. His latest hit was the dark checked suit he wore to CinemaCon. He paired the double-breasted Louis Vuitton number with a striped shirt and shiny blue tie. This is a great example of how an excellent fit is always the best accessory.
Looking at pictures of Zac Efron every week makes me remember every week how much I need to start going to the gym... The actor just doesn't get it wrong. This week he went for a casual micro-printed degradé blue shirt paired with slim jeans and brown suede lace-ups, which he topped off with his signature Persol sunglasses.
At first glance, Logan Lerman's look doesn't seem like anything out of the ordinary but his cast and undone tie are to blame for this lack of attention. His blue suit, worm with a white shirt and printed tie is a winning combination. The best part of the look are actually the leather and suede blue shoes, which add texture and tie it all together.
Bill Skarsgard, the youngest of the talented-and-good-looking Viking family, opted for an unexpected olive green double-breasted suit worn with a grey shirt and dark grey tie. I love the combination of colours and the fit, which is perfect. I only wish those shirt buttons disappeared.

Most Stylish of the Week: Zac Efron, Penn Badgley & Shia LeBeouf

Either this past week has been terribly quiet in the menswear department or I am useless at finding images online. One way or another, this post is not as exciting as I would've liked it to be.
Zac Efron's appearance on the post is a bit of a cheat because he hasn't dressed himself as he's in the set of his latest film. But seeing that most celebrities get dressed, to a certain extent, by someone else I thought it would be okay. The proportions of this look couldn't be more perfect. I love the printed tie worn with the button-down shirt but my favourite part of the look are the penny loafers. Worn sock-less and with slightly cropped trousers they're the chicest option for the spring, specially if you get to play around with casual Friday at work.
Ever since wrapping up Gossip Girl Penn Badgley has taken scruffy to a whole new level way past chic. This week he seems to have put an end of his lack of personal hygiene and married the scruffy vibe with a relaxed yet cool look. I love the touch of the tuxedo jacket worn over the loose yellow tee and the brown Oxford shoes. Red circles on your eyes are never a good touch, though.
If you scroll down to forget about Shia LeBeouf's out of control facial hair his Prada suit and polo shirt make for a knock-out outfit. The fit of the suit if perfect and the slight shine and dash of burgundy of the polo shirt bring in a dash of refined sportswear. And the cast? Well, I'm more of a white clay and and crutches kind of man, but whatever floats his boat.

The Most Dashing Gents at the 2013 Academy Awards

For the first time in years, I feel like Oscar night was a great time for menswear! Even though no one dared to wear anything bold there was a real variety in the range of tuxedos the attendees chose to wear.
Eddie Redmayne wore a stunningly fitted single-breasted one-button Alexander McQueen tux with peak silk faille rever, gold barbed cufflinks and, my favourite, black velvet skull slippers. The shoes really elevate the look and I am so glad that Eddie stays masculine and elegant but daring.
Bradley Cooper wore a custom made Tom Ford 3-piece tuxedo. The fit was spotless – slightly cropped trousers, perfect sleeve length with just enough cuff showing. The best thing about Bradley's look was the slicked-back hair and scruffy stubbled, which balanced each other out and were a good change from Cooper's usual ungroomed self.
The surprise of the night was Chris Pine, who wore a double-chested number by Ermenegildo Zegna su misura and Salvatore Ferragamo shoes. He knows how to wear a suit and always looks confident and sharp. I loved the classic cut of the suit, the perfectly tied bowtie and his stubble, which added an interesting touch to the look.
Daniel Day-Lewis, who took home his 3rd Oscar, wore a custom made Domenico Vacca tuxedo. As I've said many times before I love a midnight blue tux and, even though I like it more with a broad split satin lapel, I loved the modern touch the shawl collar gave to Day-Lewis. I wasn't crazy about his shoes but any man who can rock untidy grey hair on the red carpet deserves my respect.



The other two style highlights of the night were:
1. The music number by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth MacFarlane and Daniel Radcliffe. This is exactly what Oscar entertainment should always be like – cool dudes in pristine tuxedos singing Frank Sinatra. Gordon-Levitt and McFarlane both went for Gucci tuxedos, while Radcliffe went for a Prada number – and a mighty chic one, I might add.
2. George Clooney's grooming. The actor, who stays faithful to Armani for his red carpet attire, looked great with his grey beard and slight quiff. It's a lot of work to keep a beard well groomed but Clooney's got it all right – perfect length, trimmed around the edges and perfectly combed. His hair also looked fantastic, styled but slightly casual.

Most Stylish of the Week: Derek Blasberg, Louis Tomlinson & JT

In the midst of award season we have finally had a great week of casual style thanks to London Fashion Week. Derek Blasberg, the most sartorially savvy editor, wore a deep red suit with a printed shirt and white shoes. A perfect example of traditional-meets-modern. Louis Tomlinson attended the TopShop Unique show in a TopMan fleck blazer, which seemed out of a page of Harry Styles' style book. His hair, as usual, was looking mighty fine.
David Beckham took his boys out for a (posh) Indian meal earlier this week in yet another of his now signature flat caps and proving that velvet doesn't have to be all that formal but is always chic. Justin Timberlake look his usual dapper self at LAX catching a flight to London for the Brits. This time, however, he wasn't wearing Tom Ford.
Jude Law walked the Berlin Film Festival red carpet in a velvet Prada tuxedo that fit like a glove. If only he could stick to this style instead of succumbing to his infamous v-neck t-shirts... And Chris Pine wore an über-classic black and cut-to-perfection and white suit combo by Ermenegildo Zegna, which he kept interesting with his rectangular specs, giving the look a nice touch of geek chic.

The star-studded SS13 Prada Campaign

Following the success of the FW12 menswear campaign featuring Hollywood stars, Prada have kept the same recipe for the new season. And it's funny because I did not see this one coming.
Aaron Taylor-Johson, Harvey Keitel, Dane Haan and Benicio del Toro are the new faces of the brand. An eclectic group of actors only Prada could bring together. I've been really enjoying their choice of men over the last few seasons – Michael Pitt was one of my favourites.
This time around I'm very glad to see Dane Haan as face of the brand. This year he's appeared in some of the most talked-about films – Lincoln, Lawless – and I personally really enjoyed his performance in Chronicle. And he's got one of the main parts in Kill Your Darlings, one of the films I'm really looking forward to in 2013.

In only a few seasons Prada has managed to take something as traditional and classic as the wingtip brogue and spin it into an avant-garde accessory which says a lot about its wearer without defining him. As much as I loved the espadrille platform and the foam one that followed I honestly didn't think people would wear them through the seasons. But I guess that if anyone can transform a trend into an icon that is Prada.
Now the brand has released the 'Levitate' shoe, which exposes a jogging trainer-like platform sole through a see-through cover. So you can run to work in these and it will look like you're sort of flying. Thing of them as 21st century Hermes – the god, not the brand – sandals.
The new platform style comes in different colour combinations and shoe models some of which you can check out here on the Prada website. The new style is also surprisingly affordable – having in mind you're buying Prada. My personal favourites are the classic maroon brogues above and the same model in black.

A bit of Prada inspiration on this week's Boardwalk Empire

Even though we already saw this coat on last season of Boardwalk Empire I didn't make the connection with Prada until now. On this week's episode Chalky White makes another appearance on his red overcoat with an astrakhan collar detail. I instantly thought of the printed number Adrien Body wore on the Prada catwalk back in January when the FW12 collection was presented. This one was a bit more bold, double-chested and a full bi-colour astrakhan collar. Perhaps Miuccia has been watching the show and feeling inspired?

Most Stylish of the Weekend: Aaron Paul wears Prada to the Emmys

I did not stay up to watch the Grammys last Sunday but I probably should have. When I did watch them the night after I realised how excited I actually get about television awards. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that approximately 40% of my week is spent watching American TV shows.
The best (style) surprise of the night was how dapper Jimmy Fallon looked in his tux. I haven't been able to ID the designer yet – it's a lot harder than with a dress, as you might imagine – but it was perfectly tailored for him, that was evident. I might spend some time and words trying to explain everything this tuxedo did for Jimmy and how this is proof that tailoring is a man's best friend but GQ did it first and much better so just read their's here.
Aaron Paul was one of the big winners of the night. He was one of the few gents at the event who actually stood out. His brown kid mohair shawl collar tuxedo, white smoking popeline shirt, beige bowtie with a matching pocket square and brown spazzolato oxfords were so refreshing against everyone's traditional tuxes. And who was it by? Prada, of course.
Probably feeling a little envy after seeing these two guys, Justin Timberlake wore a double-chested tuxedo later this week. It's true that it's not hard for him to look good in pretty much anything but I like the tieless element of the look and the sartorial if somewhat flamenco choice of the polka dot pocket square.

This week's Best Grooming goes to Leonardo DiCaprio, or rather to Jordan Belfort, the character he plays in Martin Scorsese's latest film 'The Wolf of Wall Street'. Leo has been spotted looking mighty fine in a darker and slicker hairdo than we're used to from him. Hopefully this is just the beginning of another brilliantly styled movie following in the footsteps of Bud Fox.

Most Stylish of the Week: Robert Pattinson wears Gucci, looks better than ever

If public embarrassment does to everyone what it has done to Robert Pattinson, I want some. The actor is looking better than ever and so is his hair. It's almost like he wakes up every morning and perfectly messes his hair up to show Kristen Stewart what she's missing. I like his style. On top of it, he wore an indigo blue Gucci suit paired with a shirt in a slightly darker shade of blue and a black tie. Simple and modern.

Being so close to Diane Kruger has made Joshua Jackson absorb some of her effortless style. He has been rocking some pretty great summer looks over the last few weeks while filming in Canada. I don't approve of the flip flops but if Diane is okay with them I guess so am I.

Josh Hutcherson should stay blond. The actor has dyed his hair once again for the filming of 'Catching Fire' and he's looking great. It adds a nice rock and roll vibe to his look. Like anyone under 6' he struggles a bit with his trouser length but if Daniel Radcliffe and I found a solution for this I'm sure it's just a matter of time before he does.

Though you should have definitely not only heard of them but also seen them in action Ezra Miller, Logan Lerman, Johnny Simmons are the guys to watch out for. The stars of 'The Perks of Being a Wallflower' – watch the trailer here –, which I can't wait to see, cover the September issue of Out totally decked up in Prada in a brilliant shoot by Kai Z Feng. Their press tour for the movie is going to be such a treat!

Miuccia Prada & the Art of Reinvention

Even though Prada always hosts their menswear and womenswear shows at the same space on Via Fogazzaro you would never think you're ever entering the same venue as last season. The wide open carpeted runway from last season had disappeared, the steps were now a ramp. Instead, I found a white sterile room flanked by blocks of press and buyers and a zig-zagging ramp at the back.
As soon as the show started it was evident that this was a game of precision. Perfect beams of light created a maze-light catwalk – geometry. After toying with flowers, pastels, golf motifs and colourful studs Miuccia seemed to want a clean slate. The SS13 collection was a beautifully precise story of modern lines and androgyny with a subtle reference to sportswear, specifically to tennis, via The Royal Tenenbaums – we wouldn't want to miss out on Miuccia's signature quirk.
Because it was about starting from scratch, we saw the reinvention of the basics: the polo shirt (my favourite), the v-neck jumper, even the slacks. The colour palette was restricted to white, beige, blues and blacks, apple green and burgundy used in a form of colour blocking that had more to do with the visual effect – is that part of the shirt or the jacket? is that top one piece? – than with any trend. Miuccia creates her own.

Behind the scenes of the Prada FW12 campaign

Today Prada has released the behind the scenes video of their campaign shoot for FW12, if you haven't seen it yet you can have a first look here.
It's amazing to watch this because all four men – Gary Oldman, Willem Dafoe, Garrett Hedlund and Jamie Bell – look just as cool and dapper off screen as they do on the ad photos. Not that I had much of a doubt. I don't think anyone in the world could walk the runway as well as Gary Oldman did a few months ago at the Prada FW12 show.

I think I might have just bounced on my seat a little when I found the above image in my email inbox. That is how excited I am about the new FW12 Prada menswear campaign.
Gary Oldman, Jamie Bell, Garrett Hedlund and Willem Dafoe are the stars of the new season's ads shot by David Sims. I love the cinematic feel and how, like everything Prada does, there seems to be a story behind every grin and pose. Prada says that "each leading man plays a different archetype, layering codes of dress in a subtle parody of power and role-play. Exaggerated poses and conspiratorial glances hint at the game, a palm solemnly placed on the heart or into a pocket with precise formality. A cardinal red background speaks of ceremony and theatre – the light accentuating the cut of a sleeve or the slope of a coat tail – while each man transforms the clothing into a costume for their own unique performance."

I honestly thought that last season's ads featuring Michael Pitt (!) were unmatchable but I was clearly wrong. I never thought when I saw the FW12 Prada show last January in Milan that they would go on to shoot their runway stars for the campaign. I would only be further blown away if they had shot a mini series where all four men wore all Prada and fought each other without getting their hair messed up.

Most Stylish of the Week: It's all in the Prada tie

It hasn't been a particularly good week in menswear style, though you can always trust David Beckham to bring in some effortless coolness. Always.
I want to start with Austin Butler. I have been watching his style for weeks now but can't quite decide on whether he's just another LA guy or if there is something interesting in the way he dresses. It's funny because most of what he's wearing in the picture above qualifies as things I would never wear – baseball hat, plunging neck tee, tracksuit bottoms. But I can't seem to feel like there is something cool about the way he's put them together and added a nice grey denim jacket and a pair of navy TOMS shoes. I'll keep observing and reporting back.
This week I would like to name Stefano Tonchi as best dressed. This man has made a signature style out of double-breasted blazers and neckerchiefs. But it's incredible how he always manages to look different and very current in terms of fashion. What makes this look he wore to the Mulberry dinner last night during the first day of the Frieze Art Fair in New York is the Prada tie. I posted some of them on (Fashion, Frankly's brand new) Tumblr and I am definitely getting myself one in the next couple of weeks!
Best grooming goes, once again, to Mr David Beckham. I really want to know whether someone does it for him, if it is a great cut he can sweep back with his hand or if he just wakes up looking like that in the morning.

The SS12 Build-Up: Prada Prints

Spring is barely even getting closer and all I can think about is what I am going to be wearing in a few weeks. I have this love/hate relationships with the warmer seasons because I never know what to wear and I'm always sweaty an uncomfortable. It's even more difficult being a man because there is only so much you can work with (shorts + t-shirts/polo shirts) and London has a tendency of changing season a few times a day.
So this year I have decided I must make myself buy some statement tops and bottoms to be worn with other more basic tops or bottoms. Basically, I don't want to look like I am wearing the same clothes for the next 3 or 4 months.
Adding to my collection of checked shorts I would like to welcome Prada's printed polo shirts into my wardrobe. So much attention has been given to their 50's printed shirts but people seem to be overlooking my favourite pieces. The blazers and suits, quite in line with some of the Miu Miu prints we have seen for the womenswear FW12 line, were also perfect for me.

Even though they are not quite my cup of tea I must say I couldn't stop looking at the SS12 Prada shoes. I loved how Miuccia managed to keep her momentum from last season going with a brogue take on the classic golf shoes. If I weren't such a classic when it comes to shoes I would wear this pair above in a heartbeat.
I would have to be a lot braver to pull off the pair below with the metallic studs and crystals. But, again, I would gladly be seen walking around carrying the Prada gold bags. Or does someone carry them for you? I would know if I had ever played golf... In any case, they're incredibly cool.

I was also very impressed with the t-shirts. Big designers tend to either overdo tees or just stamp their name or logo on them, which I hate. Prada, on the other hand, went for funky young prints like the florals below. I am not much of a florals fan but if I I'd definitely wear the blue, black and yellow one below. Same for the slightly cropped jackets. Simply perfect!

Prada FW12: Dr. No gets a makeover

I don't think anyone would disagree with me if I said that one's first ever Prada show is one of life's highlights that are impossible to forget. Well, I am a very lucky guy and I got to experience this first hand last weekend during Milan Fashion Week.
I first got goose pumps (of excitement) as I entered the venue and walked up the stairs with a 20-metre Prada logo staring back at me. The actual show space was a stunning square open space with columns running down its middle and four blocks of seats on each side. The only decoration element and the most striking was the huge red carpet with geometric motifs. It was a simple but very strong setting.
The clothes were quite different from what we've seen over the last couple of seasons. In recent collections Miuccia has looked at the past quite a lot (50's, 60's, 70's) and updated the look to make it "Prada" but also very modern and current. This time she has done a little of that by slightly referencing the 60's but she's done so in a very different way. The feel of the collection is very much futuristic rather than contemporary –"Retro-futuristic", if you will– like a new take on Dr No. The emphasis was on outerwear –double-chested knee-lenght overcoats in either in simple cut wools, printed fabrics with astrakhan collars or even jacquard, which almost looked like dressing gowns.
The collection was all about formal attire but it didn't take itself too seriously. Here's also where the VIP guests came in –Garrett Hedlund, Adrien Brody, Jamie Bell, Emile Hirsch, Gary Oldman, Tim Roth and Willem Dafoe all missed the Golden Globes to wear Miuccia's creations in Milan. Bell, Oldman and Brody were formal and serious, professional. Roth and Hedlund were goofy, they were having fun.
It was definitely one of those shows that people talk about for years and I am so glad I got to be a part of it! Watch below my video of the finale and click here to see Miuccia taking a bow.

Michael Pitt for the Prada SS12 Campaign

Today the images from the men's Prada SS12 campaign have been released with Michael Pitt as the front man, shot by David Sims. I did not see this coming in the least, which makes it an absolutely brilliant surprise as I am a huge Michael Pitt fan and I'm currently obsessed with Prada's SS12 collection. Miuccia has managed to bring together a quirkiness and wit to the very trendy 50's theme.
Sims, who has really outdone himself this time, has adopted a 50's portraiture style for the campaign so it's no wonder it works so well! What Prada meant to do and what they achieved so successfully is to get this sense of a blurred line between sportswear and work attire. Exactly the sort of changes that started happening in menswear during the end of the 1950's and the beginning of the 60's.
I normally wouldn't choose to share all the pictures from the campaign but these are stunning pieces of photography! And I just can't wait until this collection is in the shops. I need the printed neckerchiefs and shirts in my life, pronto!
