Best Dressed Men at the 73rd Golden Globe Awards: My Top 5

It had been a while since I last had the chance to stay up all night to watch award shows so last night I was all giddy with anticipation trying to stay awake for the Golden Globes. Though the ceremony itself keeps getting duller by the year men's fashion seems to be on the up.

Looking at my last Golden Globes post from 2014 it looks like actors (and their stylist) have finally understood that while a classic black tuxedo is perfectly elegant it can get a bit repetitive. So this year I am happy to have my list topped with guys who tried something different.

Eddie Redmayne tops the list in a bicolour number by Gucci. I find that pairing black trousers with a different colour works great for evening. That, together with the subtle polka dot print of the jacket and the slim fit makes for a perfect modern take on evening wear.

Following suit is Ryan Gosling, no surprise here. He, too, went for a bicolour combination – black trousers and a classic ivory evening jacket by Ralph Lauren. Gosling's build is slightly too broad for a slim fit. However, he achieved a slim effect by having all pieces perfect fit and carefully choosing a spread collar with a bowtie that didn't overpower the look. He finished it off with a pair of Gucci patent leather shows – the most popular choice last night.

Paul Dano, who has had a terrific year in movies and TV (Love & Mercy, Youth, War & Peace), was decked down in Prada. I will never tire of repeating how strong a colour midnight blue is for evening. In his case, choosing a double-breasted jacket was a perfect choice as he's a tall but narrow-shouldered guy. Tod's patent leather shoes finished off the look.

Tom Ford was the designer of choice for Michael Fassbender. It is the strong detailing that make this black look interesting – the very traditional shawl lapels, cuffed jacket sleeves and bowtie, all in satin. Should the trousers have been taken up a bit more and paired with an evening slipper instead of lace ups the look would have been perfect. The beautiful Chopard timepiece on his wrist somehow makes up for that.

Orlando Bloom is the only actor who also appeared on my list a couple of years back. His black Lanvin suit was a very different take this year. The top half of the look was an improvement. I love the simple jacket and Lanvin's signature oversizes bowtie. However, a slim fit on the trousers would have suited the patent leather slippers, my favourite footwear choice of the night as was his grooming. Nothing updates a classic evening look like a modern haircut.

Frank's Film Recap: What I Watched this Week

I've been spending a bit of time over the past couple of weeks trying to catch up with my never-ending movie watch list. Because spring and summer are usually quieter when it comes to big movies I tend to do most of my catching up then. This is what I watched over the past 7 days.

The Signal

Even though I am not a sic-fi connoisseur I know my way around a space-time continuum and a wormhole. Having watched other titles like District 9, which tackle the low-budget approach to the genre with mind-blowing creativity, I was excited to watch something along these lines.
The plot is not necessarily full of unexpected twists and turns but I found it interesting enough to continue watching. Perhaps what made me appreciate it the most was the very elegant and restrained way in which they used their special effects budget. Definitely enjoyable, especially for those who appreciate the beauty of filmmaking.

Focus
As I said recently on my first movie post I enjoy watching mostly everything – you're not always in the mood for a five star film. And that was exactly my mood when I chose to watch Focus.
It was definitely easy to watch but in that way that makes you want to check your Instagram every 10 minutes. The script runs on cliche after cliche and feels proud of its carefully choreographed and absolutely unbelievable pick-pocketer scenes. Its attempt to be slick and stylish reads more like and overproduced and tacky episode of Revenge. It's a great movie choice to have playing in the background on a lazy Sunday in.

Citizenfour
I had been waiting quite some time to watch this documentary, which won the Oscar for tis genre this past February. A real-life government conspiracy is usually enough to make a good story but when the topic is currently hot news and told by a talented director it also makes a gripping and informative film. I especially enjoyed its very sincere and non-sensationalist tone, which shows the human side of everyone involved and doesn't make a hero out of Snowden. This one will most definitely keep you from checking you phone for the entire 114min in runs.

Lost River
I only read movie reviews after watching them myself – mainly because I probably wouldn't watch half of the films I do if I did. In this case, my flatmate made sure I was aware of the very few stars Ryan Gosling's directorial debut had received.
It wasn't a bad film – the art direction and photography alone made it something worth watching for me. If you're a fan of Gosling you'll easily recognise all of his favourites – 80's Americana and neon lights, a touch of dark gospel and voodoo à la Monkey Island and a love for finding the beauty in decay. Matt Smith's, Iain De Caestecker's and Ben Mendelsohn's performances are some of the highlights of a movie that is perhaps too overindulgent but that makes it hard for visual freaks life myself to say anything really bad about the film.

Most Stylish of the Week: Ryan Gosling in Salvatore Ferragamo

It has been a while since the last Most Stylish of the Week – partly because of laziness but mostly because of my lack of energy over the last few weeks. This time, though, I couldn't pass on the opportunity to post about Ryan Gosling's latest public appearance.
The actor showed up at the premiere of his latest film 'Only God Forgives', which I can't wait to see. Ryan wore a season-appropriate Salvatore Ferragamo look: an off-white suit with a white shirt and brown leather shoes. The lack of tie didn't prevent the outfit from looking absolutely sharp and chic. It's a perfect example of how a light suit should be worn.
Jason Sudeikis, an American GQ favourite, wore a Calvin Klein grey chintz wool one-button notch lapel suit and dress shoes from the Spring 2013 collection. Jason, like Ryan, wore it without a tie and open collar and accessorised it with a cool pair of grey sunglasses and a great quiff.
Kevin Jonas has never been the best dressed of the Jonas Brothers but this week he looked great in a look anyone of us should be careful putting together at home. The singer layered a short-sleeve navy shirt under a printed t-shirt. A great solution for an interesting an manly outfit that must be combined with utter care.
A favourite of mine, Daniel Radcliffe, continues looking great on every occasion. This time he went for a smart but young number with blue chinos paired with a light blue checked button-down shirt and high-top Vans. The last perfect touch was, of course, the tight haircut and light stubble that give the look a contemporary feel.

Most Stylish of the Week: Ryan Gosling is back, in Gucci velvet

As far as I'm concerned, any week in style is a great one as long as Ryan Gosling is out and about. The actor started promoting 'The Place Beyond the Pines' this week and he did so as he usually does – in style. Ryan wore a deep greyish green velvet two-button suit y Gucci (no one does velvet like them). He kept the rest of the outfit classic with black shoes and tie and a white shirt that allowed the suit to shine (in more than one way).
Joshua Jackson managed to dodge Diane Kruger for a couple of seconds and prove he is just a stylish – if only we didn't get distracted with his blonde girlfriend when they're together... He wore a beautiful 3-piece electric blue suit, which felt young and fresh thanks to the tie-less situation and the brown accents of the belt and the shoes.
Mark Ronson started the daring sartorial choices way before Ryan Gosling did, which is why I have always been a fan of his style. This week he rocked a double-chested green jacket, which he wore with a slim black shirt and trousers. He finished it off with – my favourite – Raf Simons' gold-chain black lace-up shoes.
The other Ryan – Ryan Reynolds, that is – is quickly becoming an icon of effortlessly chic preppy style. This week he wore the classic chinos and navy coat we've seen him in before with a perfect double layer of henley and cardigan. He looks so cool he makes Burger King look like Balthazar's takeout.
Justin Theroux has almost made it onto this weekly post many times, which is why I made room for him this time. While his tough rockstar look is nothing I would normally wear the guy really understands the importance of good fit and, more importantly, of texture. It's quite simply badass.
Another actor who has really been excelling lately is Daniel Craig who, once again, took casual chic to a whole new level of coolness. Another great example of how important a good fit it.

Most Stylish of the Week: Ryan Gosling's Red Carpet Comeback

We have entered the most prolific time for the season for celebrity style – award season. From now until the end of February an endless happening of red carpets will be coming our way. And not only that, with London Collections: Men and Pitti kicking off this past week and Milan and Paris following I am going to be spoilt for choice!
Tinie Tempah has undoubtedly been the best dressed guy during the menswear fashion week in London. My favourite of his looks was his bright red suit, which he wore with Christian Louboutin loafers to the GQ dinner on the closing day. I honestly can't think of anyone who could have pulled off such a colour while looking so slick.
One of my favourites, Eddie Redmayne, continues to show the world what true British style is all about. For the People's Choice Awards this week he wore a checked olive green wool suit. The navy cardigan, the unbuttoned shirt and the bright pocket square give the outfit a modern and young vibe.
And Ryan Gosling is back! A man's got to promote his films so it looks like we're gonna get to enjoy some more of his spectacular red carpet moments. He starts the year with a nutmeg Gucci suit paired with a crisp white shirt, black satin tie and studded leather lace-ups. I would elaborate on why this is such a successful look but it's pretty straightforward, no?

This could have easily been an all-Tinie Tempah post but I edited my favourite looks down to two. The second one is a more subtle but equally stylish number by Burberry the singer wore to the brand's breakfast at their Knightsbridge menswear store.
David Gandy was all over the LC:M shows this seasons but, quite frankly, he relies on his looks too much. Things might always look great on him but style-wise a man's got to make some effort. One of my preferred looks this week was this black and blue number that mixed formal and casual elements perfectly.
And lastly, Harry Styles is back in London. He made his way through Heathrow earlier this week is the  perfect musician look. I am especially keen on the jacket – great modern take on a trench – and the Carhartt hat, which adds a needed pop of colour.

Most Stylish of the Week: *puts hands in his pockets*

Any week when both Ryan Gosling, Ryan Lochte and Zac Efron make public appearances is a good week in style by my books.
Ryan Lochte attended the Ralph Lauren show (duh!) this week and looked sharp in a navy number. The length of the sleeves, the tie knot and the pocket square and simply perfect! The interesting bit of his look were the cuffed trousers worn with Chelsea boots. Brownie points for that.
Ryan Gosling is finally back in the world. I had been suffering from withdrawal symptoms all summer. This week he rocked a brown Prince of Wales check gucci suit. Brown can often look dated or old but Ryan can pull anything off. I wish he unbuttoned his two top shirt buttons, though.
You don't really get a lot of stylish film directors but if anyone had to be that's Baz Luhrmann. He is about to turn 50 and easily looks 10 years younger. His shirt, cardi and trouser combo is super classic but the slim fit gives it a modern touch. I am hoping for great red carpet looks during the premieres of 'The Great Gatsby' next year.

I don't have anyone up for best grooming this week but instead I have pose of the week. Almost everyone this week went for the hands-in-pockets pose. I guess it's a good casual one and you can either go for the "hunky here-I-am" look (shoulders up and back) or the "shy geek" one (shoulders down and forward). Zac Efron and David Beckham chose the first while Josh Hartnett went for the latter. All three of them also looked very casual but chose nice colours and accessories that made their looks a hit.

Most Stylish of the Week: Burgundy lovers

For the last few weeks I have been trying to put together a post every Friday with a few of my favourite celebrity looks from the week but for one reason or another it hasn't happened until now. I will try and do them every Friday/Saturday but I can't promise anything!
I decided to start today because it is unlikely that every week I will be this happy about the people in the list as these guys above are probably in my Top 5 of best dressed. There also seems to be a common thread of burgundy/maroon pops of colour in everyone's outfit.
Harry Brant Jr (if you don't know him, shame on you) is the most stylish teenager to ever exist on planet earth. He's like a real life Chuck Bass only with a lot more flair and taste. I am loving the quilted-but-not velvet blazer and the matching bow tie with just the right proportions. I really like the fact that he kept everything else classic and simple but added an extra touch with the gold embroidered smoking slippers.
Robert Downey Jr is one of the men who best looks on the red carpet. He wears a lot of Lanvin and his tinted glasses add a slightly rock vibe, which I love. His hair is also looking mighty good at the moment!
Andrew Garfield has this ease to look stylish that only the British have. He has been sticking to the classics lately – the striped cardigan, black skinny jeans, dark suede brogues, simple tees – and it's really working. This week I loved the burgundy mackintosh he threw on and, well, the hair. Some men are just lucky.
King of style and cool, aka Ryan Gosling, has also been spotted this week. He was wearing his signature battered black boots with skinny jeans, an Aztec print t-shirt and a burgundy cardigan. What is genius about this is the fact that the bottom part of the look is almost grungy but the top, though relaxed, is chic. Also key to the look are the mustard aviator shades that give it all a polished feel.

They're Fly: How to bring it in the summer

Let's face it, it's hard for a man to dress in the summer. Keeping cool is key but that, in therms of male clothing, reduces garment options down to two pieces: trousers and top. It's quite a challenge to look fashionable everyday when all you have to play with are two pieces.
Ryan Kwanten's, Ryan Gosling's and Ed Westwick's looks are great examples of how to do this. It's a good idea to add a pattern —stripes, plaid, maritime, even florals— that has to be subtle. Be careful with vests (or wife-beaters) because only men with guns (i.e. Gosling) can pull those off and not look like twats.
Trousers, if not shorts, should be light chinos, slightly looser than you'd wear them in the winter and rolled up (this keeps you cool in more than one way).
Sunglasses and belts are a lot more important in the summer because they say something about who you are. Ray-Ban's are always a safe bet but I personally recommend a classic pair or Persol's or Oliver Peoples'. They have to be a classic shape that goes well with everything but they must have an edge as well, not to be boring.

Frank loves: Paisley scarves

While I was away in Granada for Christmas these past few days I mentally analysed my current style (yes, I'm that sad) and quickly came to the conclusion that I have cycles of very intense obsessions, which slowly turn into personal staples. And what I mean by this is I get fixated on a particular item, colour or fabric and buy as much of it as I possibly can for several weeks until I almost reach boredom. I then stop wearing the item for about the same time as I was focused on it to then retake it again, more calmly. It happened exactly like this whit single and double-chested blazers, bow-ties, heavy-knit scarves, corduroy, tartan, burgundy... the list goes on. My current personal craze is paisley scarves. I have recently bought my third one from Zara (Christmas presents post to come) and I simply can't stop wearing it. I have to confess that seeing Ryan Gosling wear his obviously had its effect (more than I'll ever admit).

I have been looking around for my future purchases in the field and have found that both Zara and Massimo Dutti (pictured above on the left on a Harper's Bazaar España editorial) have a really nice range of both different paisley patterns, colours and fabrics. My personal favourite if one can splurge is most undoubtedly Etro, the best pattern maker (maybe Missoni too) in the world.
