Most Stylish of the Week: Colour vs. Black & White

MSOTW29Sept

After my forced blogging break, I though it was about time to get the Most Stylish of the Week back. This is a busy time of the year for events – Fashion Week included – and there is plenty of good menswear style to choose from.
One of my favourites this week is Zachary Quinto, who finally has realised that making a statement is not about being loud. His grey and blue checked suit becomes the centre-point of his look thanks to the quiet black shirt and shoes. This and a perfect fit make for a killer outfit.
André Saraiva couldn't be more in his element in Paris. I always love how he masterly brings together formal elements – the DC blazer – with his battered boots, and the pop of colour jumper that brings out the colour splashes on his awesome jeans.
Nailing the day-time suit this week is Adam Scott, who paired his sandy suit with toe-cap tan leather lace-up and kept his look interesting with a micro-check shirt  and blue knit tie. The soft colours and texture complimented the suit without being loud. I am just not too keen on these tiny-ass button-down collars...
Chuck Bass seems to have had a comeback this week thanks to Ed Westwick's merlot Zegna suit. The accessorising here keeps quiet not to overpower the statement-coloured suit. The brown tie is the perfect on-trend finishing touch.
At first I wasn't sure about Jake Gyllenhaal's fixation with wearing the same battered boots everywhere he went. And yet they look so cool with his classic grey number. The knit tie adds an interesting texture contrast and the effect of the boots simply makes it all feel fresh.
Designer Kenzo Takada made it look so easy to be effortlessly chic. His black suit stayed formal but cool thanks to his lightweight grey cardi worn over the tie-less white shirt. I have a feeling that a (glowing) tan and grey lock of hair none of this would work as well.
It was nice to see Joseph Gordon-Levitt killing it in something other than a suit. The vintage sneakers are the best compliment to his great geometric combo of gingham shirt and checked jumper.
technically speaking there is nothing out of the ordinary about Stephen Dorff's classic number. It is the perfect fit and the subtle note of the midnight blue tie that bring it home.

Most Stylish of the Week: James Bond, Spider-Man & Chuck Bass

MSOTW21Oct

If anyone had any doubts about why Daniel Craig is James Bond this should help clear it up. The super traditional colour combination could have been boring were it not for the perfect fit of the suit. The proportions are spot-on to the millimetre. I smell Tom Ford?
Andrew Garfield was really showing off all the new muscles he had to get to be Spidey. And who could blame him. I don't love the slight shine of his polo shirt but I like the casual chic vibe it has paired with the chinos and deck shoes. Also, another great lesson in grooming. When going for a scruffy beard a gelled hairdo will always balance it out.
John Mayer turned 35 this week and had a well overdue trim, which made him look 10 years younger and 8 kilos lighter. As much as I wish he went for slightly slimmer clothes I was quite keen oh his birthday dinner outfit. It's all about the velvet bowtie and denim jacket – a combo I will be trying myself.
The Gossip Girl boys have been filming non-stop for the last few weeks and have finally wrapped their last season of the show. In style. Ed Westwick showed us mortals a man shouldn't be scared of bold pin stripe suits. In fact, we should embrace them with a whole lot of pattern mixing enthusiasm. Penn Badgley, on the other hand, decided to leave his boring suits in Brooklyn and go for a beautiful Alexander McQueen suit from the FW12 collection. The tie is just a tad too short but that blazer is a killer.

He's fly: Chuck Bass

ChuckPatterns
The last season of Gossip Girl started this week and, cringy as it has got over the last six years, I can't help but want to finish what I started. So I am watching. And we still have Chuck Bass style to make up for the insanely cheesy lines and the absurd amount of poker-related puns.
If I didn't know better I would think that Eric Daman has been reading Fashion, Frankly. Not only Chuck is now sporting the haircut of the moment but he also gave a lesson in pattern mixing that would make Tim Gunn weak at the knees. The plaid flannel jacket, though too much for the summer, looks so great with the micro check of the shirt. And just in case anyone thought that the solid blue bow tie (perfectly tied) was too safe, there's the paisley pocket square matching the colour palette and adding the final twist of genius.

Most Stylish of the Week: Tuxedos are always in

The sole reason this post has come to be is Ed Westwick. The dapper actor landed in Cannes yesterday for the promotion of his latest film "Romeo & Juliet". I am curious to see him as someone other than Chuck Bass but it seems to me like Tybalt will suit him just fine.
Westwick arrived in Cannes wearing a slim Yale blue suit. The trousers were exactly the right length and looked amazing with the cobalt blue leather penny loafers. The simple white tee added a great casual touch as did the Persol shades and the messy hair. For the evening event Ed slipped into a classic tuxedo worn with a black velvet bow tie. He trimmed his stubble and fixed his hair a little – he's looking awesome at the moment.
Nate Berkus wore this amazing black and midnight blue tux to the American Ballet Theatre Gala. I am one of those people who fights for originality when it comes to men's black tie. There's only so many black suits a man can wear... This combo is classic and elegant but adds a little twist. The tortoise shell glasses also add a slight pop of colour. Very chic.

This week's best grooming goes to Jared Leto for his perfectly balanced look. If you wear an untrimmed beard, which is fair enough, you need to tidy up your hair to avoid looking too scruffy. Which is why the slicked back hair is a great idea – shabby chic, right?

They're Fly: How to bring it in the summer

1. A.P.C. anchor logo t-shirt, 2. PS by Paul Smith plaid shirt, 3. Steve McQueen Person sunglasses, 4. ASOS anchor buckle belt.
Let's face it, it's hard for a man to dress in the summer. Keeping cool is key but that, in therms of male clothing, reduces garment options down to two pieces: trousers and top. It's quite a challenge to look fashionable everyday when all you have to play with are two pieces.
Ryan Kwanten's, Ryan Gosling's and Ed Westwick's looks are great examples of how to do this. It's a good idea to add a pattern —stripes, plaid, maritime, even florals— that has to be subtle. Be careful with vests (or wife-beaters) because only men with guns (i.e. Gosling) can pull those off and not look like twats.
Trousers, if not shorts, should be light chinos, slightly looser than you'd wear them in the winter and rolled up (this keeps you cool in more than one way).
Sunglasses and belts are a lot more important in the summer because they say something about who you are. Ray-Ban's are always a safe bet but I personally recommend a classic pair or Persol's or Oliver Peoples'. They have to be a classic shape that goes well with everything but they must have an edge as well, not to be boring.
