The Summer of Denim

TheSummerofDenim

I spent part of my Sunday evening clearing out my computer folders. Over the years I've piled up a lot of editorial and street style images and I like to go through them every once in a while to keep the ones I still like after years and get rid of the rest.
With hundreds of pictures gone it was pretty clear that I always have been very drawn to denim. Yes, we all wear jeans pretty often but I do genuinely never leave the house without denim on my back. Luckily for me the experts (?) predict this summer to be very denim-based even encouraging us to go for the much-dreaded double-denim, which I've actually always loved.
There are two ways of wearing denim. The first, to include only one piece, be it jeans, a jacket, a shirt (chambray counts) or even this season trendy piece – the work jackets. Oxford shirts, blazers and cardigans are much welcome for combinations. Especially in white, black and beige or, my two favourite, khaki and navy.
The second, less safe, way is to double your denim. You can hardly go wrong by wearing your blue jacket with your grey or black jeans, or vice versa  (see Fig.1) – you need to really suck to make this look bad. But it becomes trickier when playing with different shades of blue. My personal advise is to keep washes classic. Avoid too many sand shades and and crotch side lines and try for either the jeans or the jacket to be a tad darker than the other (see Fig. 2)

I bought my new favourite pair of classic jeans recently in Paris by my current favourite brand AMI. They have a slight air of 80's, which gives outfits a really easy feel. For a denim jacket I would recommend All Saints. Their slim (not tight) fits and timeless washes make them perfect to go with you through the year. But for the picture below I chose a Levi's Vintage Clothing style with some very cool distressed detailing.

Just in: Transitional Basics, Pieces to Wear Now and Later

FW14TransitionalBasics

For years now I have been trying to start working on my so-called 'transitional wardrobe' – that selection of pieces you can wear in between seasons but also incorporate easily into your SS or FW looks. Last week I went on a bit of an on and offline shopping spree to make sure I was well equipped – so I actually own everything you see in the pictures above.
I started with a pair of black slim jeans because as much as I love my Acne ones they are way too old to look presentable anymore. Next on the list was a new denim jacket in a slim fit so I could wear it over a shirt but also under a blazer. I had been looking for the perfect green Oxford shirt for years and I also finally found it (I'm wearing it as I type). Once I had the green I decided I needed some more colour, which is why I chose a light bomber jacket in burgundy – also great for layering. And I was low on neutrals so I chose sneakers in an off-white/cream colour my (immense) shoe collection was really lacking.
Now I am ready to start buying key pieces for FW14, most of which I have eyed already. More on these soon!

Iñaki Carvajal x Tod's No_Code

IMG_0128sYES

I couldn't quite believe it when Tod's, one of my all-time favourite brands, asked me to take part in their latest No_Code web campaign. It was something I had never done before and I am known to be a little adverse to photo cameras but I, of course, had to say yes. When asked which photographer I'd like to work with on this project, Jonathan Daniel Pryce was my top choice. After all, he had shot me in Tod's No_Code before and everyone had sent the nicest compliments my way thanks to his images.
If you read the lovely piece they wrote on me on the No_Code website, my outfit makes a lot of sense. I chose to wear the leather and pony skin-effect lace-up shoes – buy them here – because they had a slick modern feel despite their more traditional shape. I wore them with my favourite Acne black skinny jeans, a Ralph Lauren denim shirt and my All Saints biker jacket for a classic look with a dash of rock and roll.

Go check out the amazing FW13 Tod's No_Code collection here and choose your favourites. You will not find a more comfortable and cool shoe this season!

You can see all the images and read the full interview with Tod's here.

I want to send a huge special thank you to the dapper Jarvis Macchi at Tod's, and to Silva Premoli and to Jonathan D. Pryce for their help making this happen!

Frank's Weekend Picks

IMG_0072 copy

All Saints Cargo Biker Leather Jacket: With this mild October weather we're having in the UK a leather jacket is a man's best friend. It's a great addition to any look, especially if you need a bit of an edge for a preppy outfit.

British GQ, November 2013: The latest issue of the magazine is the best companion for a weekend coffee. Also essential to get cracking with all your purchases for the FW13 season.

The Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling: I usually read a lot over the summer but I haven't had the time to do so this year so I am catching up now. To start, J.K. Rowling's light but brilliantly written latest novel. Don't let the roars of the name put you off.

The 20/20 Experience Part 2/2: It only came out last Monday but I have probably listened to it a hundred times. It's got some brilliant upbeat tunes perfect for the weekend or to start the week in high spirits.

Paris vs. New York by Vahram Muratyan: Always a favourite of mine. I love flicking through it to enjoy the witty illustrations and the excellent art direction.

Balenciaga Overnight Bag: Still my favourite bag since I bought it two years ago. It goes with me to work, on my weekend trips and holidays and, well, just about anywhere else.

Just In: All Saints Cargo Biker Leather Jacket

JUSTINallsaints

Back in February when I published my 25th Birthday wishlist list of my key items on the list was a leather jacket. I have had quite a good experience with All Saints ones in the past so I I thought I would go for it. A few weeks later, just in time for my birthday, I went and bought it but I then took it back a few days later because it didn't feel right – the sleeves were too long, the body too. And I am very specific about fit.
A couple of weeks later I went back to All Saints to see if I could find a different model that would suit me and that's when I came across the Cargo Biker Jacket. The fit is a lot more old-school than the others. The body is shorter and a bit more fitted and the same goes for the sleeves. The distressed effect, which doesn't really look great on the website imagery, gives the leather an ultra smooth feel that makes the jacket really comfortable – you feel as if you've had it for years and broken it in.
I have barely been able to take it off because it really is perfect with everything and great for this weather. I am going to take it everywhere with me this season and it will travel with me into the winter, when I will layer it under my tailored coats.

See how I wore it here.

Most Stylish of the Week: Coachella & the MTV Movie Awards

MSOTW16Apr

A little later than promised, but here is the post! It has been a great week for menswear style. So good, in fact, that it's taken me a while to edit down the options to just six.
Zac Efron makes an appearance again in almost the same outfit as last week. I wouldn't normally talk about the same look twice but I love how last week's school boy outfit has been upgraded with the blue blazer. Everything fits perfectly and even the flip flops add a cool Ivy League vibe to the otherwise smart look.
At the MTV Movie Awards Eddie Redmayne beat everyone on the red carpet. His head-to-toe All Saints look was manly, cool, young and quite a different vibe from what we're used to seeing from Eddie. And you can shop it all – jacket here, t-shirt here, denim shirt here and boots here.
Chris Pine was also present at the awards and gave a lesson in smart casual. He wore cropped blue suit trousers with a beautiful blue linen Mandarin collar shirt and suede navy lace-ups.
Over at Coachella, Elijah Wood went for a classic Spring look with his Lacoste grey flecked polo shirt, which he wore with dark jeans and dust dessert boots. He topped off the look with a killer pair of mirrored sunglasses like the ones I posted about recently.
Justin Chatwin was also at the music festival, stopping by the H&M section. As usual, he got the fit just right and I believe grey jeans and a denim shirt are always a winning combo. I might just have worn a different, less tough, pair of shoes.
Robert Downey Jr definitely marches to the beat of his own drum. The actor decided to give the locals a taste of their own style in German Lederhosen. Normally, I would have found this costume-y and borderline ridiculous but on Downey Jr is a big big hit – especially from the waist up!

The Most Stylish Guys of 2012

MSOTW2012

I have been going through all this year's Most Stylish of the Week posts to see which guys had appeared the most. Zac Efron, Robert Pattinson and Andrew Garfield are the clear winners followed up by Eddie Redmayne, Austin Butler, Harry Styles and David Beckham.
They all appear in today's post wearing some of their best looks from December apart from Beckham, of whom I couldn't find a shot I was happy with.
We can definitely expect great on and off duty outfits from Efron, Styles and Butler, who recently rocked the most amazing leather jacket with shearling collar from All Saints – exactly the jacket I need, which is now sold out, of course.

Have I overlooked anyone you would include in the list?

Spring dressing

I love the weather in London at the moment. It's warm enough to not wear more than two layers if you so wish but it's also chilly enough to not discard leather jackets just yet. And so I've been having a lot of fun (yes, a lot) getting dressed everyday. I am especially proud of my sepia/mustard trousers I bought at Top Man last summer. They just go with everything. I have also been wearing a lot my fluor Acne jumper, which reminds me a lot of one of my favourite Davidelfin collections.
I am also starting to take out my horde of espadrilles. So there's plenty of looks coming up. In the picture I'm also wearing my favourite All Saints leather jacket and low-top Converse.

I'm not Frank: LFW edition

This picture was snapped by fashion156.com as I walked into the Top Man Design show last week. I rushed a lot that morning and wasn't looking my best but as you might have guessed from my post about the LFWdaily I get over excited about having my picture online. Yes, I will calm down. Eventually.

Fashion, Frankly at LFW

We have to still have to wait for the last day of LFW to deliver its men's gems on Wednesday. I will be reporting from Top Man, CSM x Bally, Cassette Playa, Christopher Shannon and Hardy Amies. So follow me on twitter from twitpics on-the-go. In the meantime, rejoice with me as I was featured on today's LFWDaily paper. I am probably more excited than I should be but I don't care. I am enjoying my 0.2 minutes of fame. The snap is from Friday, when I was wearing my beige Uniqlo trousers, aubergine Massimo Dutti desert boots, H&M grey blazer and lilac gingham shirt, Uniqlo knitted tie, vintage tie clip, Massimo Dutti paisley scarf, YSL leopard belt, All Saints leather jacket and Louis Vuitton folder.
