I'm not Frank vs. Harry Styles: The Suede Bomber Jacket

I have always been a big fan of Harry Styles – Harry's Style? – so this isn't so much a face-off as it is a celebration of our shared good taste. You might remember I first blogged about my suede bomber jacket from Marc by Marc Jacobs back in January when I bought it from Mr Porter. It was, by a mile, the best buy of the season but because I got it sort of late in the winter I didn't get to wear it much. That is something I am making up for this time around. Not only it's a cool classic piece but it's also a bit of a statement and extremely warm – I'm not the kind to sacrifice body-temperature for fashion.
Harry was first spotted in his a week or two ago and he's since made it a wardrobe staple of his worn with his also signature skinny black jeans and Chelsea boots, which is oddly how I often wear mine. He also wore it last week for his latest appearance with One Direction in Good Morning America. His personal choice was this Saint Laurent version, which has a slightly aged-effect suede, darker knit cuffs and hem trim and tougher shearling detailing. It also doesn't feature the knit side panels from mine or the shearling lining inside. It suits him better because he's more rock and roll.

UPDATE: I wrote this post before the British Fashion Awards took place so now that Harry has won the British Style Award, I deserve a bit of recognition for my similar good taste, no?

Just In: Marc by Marc Jacobs Shearling Bomber Jacket

Little over a week ago I shared my excitement about the further reductions taking place at the Mr Porter winter sale and I promised I would post about my new purchase. So here it is.
I had been coveting this jacket from Marc by Marc Jacobs for quite some time and it was my number 1 on my Christmas wishlist so I took it as a sign when there was still one in my size. It had perfect timing, too, as I got it just a few days before heading to freezing Milan. It was the perfect touch to my fashion week winter outfits and it kept me warm in between shows. And so I have crossed 'perfect aviator jacket' off my list!

Thinking FW12: Ermenegildo Zegna's masterpiece of a trench

This week I've realised I am completely over the summer, or whatever annoying hybrid we might have had in London. Fall/Winter shopping is always not only easier but also a lot more pleasant. Winter clothes also give more room for style as men can vary between more than 3 or 4 types of garment.
So these days I've been looking around online for my key pieces for the winter, regardless of whether I can actually afford it. So far, one of the very few pieces that has stood out the most is this incredible Ermegildo Zegna trench coat. It actually feels weird referring to it as a trench coat because it's a lot more – it's a masterpiece. Living in London a trench coat is something ordinary, which is probably why I have never bought one and worn it often. Zegna's option, on the contrary, is anything but ordinary. The leather inserts and trimming, the micro-checked lining and the removable shearling collar give it a super distinctive touch. The reason why it's so great is because it's also a classic. It could be your dad's old coat (if he's very stylish) but you can rock it even better.
I doubt that at €2,720 a pop I will be able to afford one this winter but believe this, if I had a house to get a second mortgage on I would happily get into debt for years only to own this coat. If you're luckier than me you can buy it here.

Milano round 1: fur is manly and shearling stays

In case you haven't heard, fashion week is upon us. As it usually does, it opened at Pitti a few days ago, which gave way to Milan yesterday. I was lucky (not) enough to miss the streaming of Ermenegildo Zegna in the morning and Dolce & Gabbana's later on. Which was very upsetting because I was looking forward to a streaming-loaded day. I did have a chance to watch Burberry (incredible) but I'll post about that tomorrow.
Ermenegildo Zegna has done an admirable job re-establishing itself as one of Italy's power houses. They have done so in only a few seasons' time. For FW11 they have done what I like to call "an Armani". If you look at the collection you'll find very traditional Italian tailoring of slimmer silhouettes and lower waist lines. The Armani reference came in through a window to the Orient, which was more evident in the formal night attire. Shiny materials in bright reds and off-golds were mixed with velvet reminiscing of the ancient oriental empires. Otherwise, it was a very textured collection. It was also styled in a way that enhanced this making the looks more homogenous rather than the usual mix of textures, which is usually more common in menswear.

Trussardi celebrated its 100th anniversary this year at Pitti. Its main attraction was leather, which made up anything from jackets and parkas (my favourite) to trousers, coats and shirts. They also showed a considerable amount of suede, which often looked like corduroy, lined with shearling very much á la Burberry. We also saw quite a bit of fur (a trend followed by Ermenegildo and Burberry), which also lined suede blazers and leather long coats.

I would have never thought I'd ever see James Bond in a shearling coat. Or a checked shirt. Or a low v-neck tee. But he isn't really Mr. Bond. Daniel Craig was papped buying a new iPhone (personally, Blackberries are that much cooler) in what could be the trendiest ensemble he's ever worn. The scruffiness of the stubble, the hair and the unbuttoned shirt mixed really well with the vintage sunglasses and the casual but stylish suede shearling jacket. This is an outfit I will definitely be replicating as soon as I can find a nice (and affordable) shearling jacket for this season.
